Emergent Literacy Design: Tap the Fish Tank with T.

Rationale:

My lesson will encourage children in identifying that the phoneme T sounds like /t/.The goal for this lesson is that my students will gain the ability to recognize /t/ in spoken words with the help of a representation (tapping the tank). My students will practice finding words with T says /t/ in words while also using their phonetic cue reading with rhyming /t/ words.

Materials:

  • Gif of Tina tapping on glass

  • Chart of “Tina taps the fish tank ten times”

  • Primary paper

  • Pencils

  • Flashcards with TAP, TEN, RAN, TOP, TANK

  • Worksheet for assessment with pictures to identify /t/

  • Crayons

  • Book: Too Many Toys by David Shannon

Procedures:

1) Teacher will tell class: Letters make funny sounds when we say them out loud. Some words use our teeth, and some use our tongues. Let’s learn together how we make the sound /t/. We spell /t/ with the letter T. The letter T sounds like tapping. (Show gif of Tina tapping on glass)

2) When we say /t/, our tongues are touching the top of our mouths behind our teeth, and this sounds like tapping on a fish tank. (Show tapping in air while saying /t/) While saying /t/, let’s all use our hands and show what it looks like when you are tapping on an imaginary fish tank, /t/, /t/, /t/.

3) I am going to find /t/ in ten. As I stretch the word ten out very slowly, I will look for the tapping sound. “tttt-e-n.” Now I am going to do it even slower, “ttt-eee-nn” I found the tapping at the beginning of the word ten. My tongue found the roof of my mouth behind my front teeth.

4) I am now going to teach you a tongue tickler! (Show chart) “Tina taps the fish tank ten times.” Let’s all say it three times together. (says it three times) Great job!! This time we are going to say it slower and stretch out the /t/ sound at the beginning of the words. “Ttttina ttttaps the fish ttttank tttten ttttimes.” Let’s try it again, but this time we are going to break /t/ off of each word. “/T/ina /t/aps the fish /t/ank /t/en /t/imes.”

5) I am going to say two words to you and I want you to tell me which word you hear /t/ in. Do you hear /t/ in top or mop? Tan or van? Awesome job! Now let’s see if you can recognize the motion of /t/ in these next few words. If you hear /t/, I want you to tap the imaginary fish tank. If you don’t hear /t/, I want you to keep your hands in your lap. Talk, man, tick, jump, tail.

6) I want each of you to take out a piece of primary paper and a pencil. We use T to spell /t/. We are going to practice writing a capital T. I am going to model these on the board, and then I want you to each try on your paper. First, you will draw a line going down to the grass. Next, you will cross a line at the top. Now I will walk around the class as you write ten capital T’s on your sheet of paper. (after finished) Now we will write a lowercase t. To make this, we will make a cross. (Imitate on board) Draw your line going down and cross at the fence. Now you try making ten little t’s on your paper.

7) We are going to read our letter /t/ book, and it is called Too Many Toys. (Booktalk) Spencer has way too many toys. He has so many toys that they are taking over his entire house! His mom wants him to donate some, but we are just going to have to read the rest of the story to find out what happens!

8) Show TAP, ask students if the word is tap or map. “The T tells me to say /t/ so this is ttt-ap, tap. Now I would like you to try some. TEN: men or ten? RAN: ran or tan? TOP: mop or top? TANK: sank or tank?”

Assessment:

I will pass out a worksheet. The students will color the pictures of words that begin with T and finish spelling the words. I will call individual students to my desk to read the flash cards from our last step of the lesson.
